Book Reviews

LE CANAL de NANTES à BREST by Jacques Clouteau/Lauriane Clouteau
(see www.bourricot.com) The book is widely for sale in Brittany, especially in shops and tourist offices along the canal route.
Jaques2006-7.jpg
Jacques Clouteau, in the company of Ferdinand the donkey, undertook his original journey along the 360kms of towpath from Nantes to Brest in 1995, but this excellent guide is updated each year so that the details of accommodation and facilities along the way remain of use to current walkers.
The book is, of course, in French, which may prevent some from enjoying the detailed introduction to the Nantes-Brest Canal, but the reference pages that make up the bulk of this volume and cover the entire length of the canal are easy enough to use without language difficulties. Maitre Jacques presents the entire towpath, section by section, with all distances, locks, settlements and facilities marked.    RT

TOPOGUIDES (in French)
The French walking organisation FFRP publish this series of walking guides to all parts of France including good coverage of Brittany. These can be found in all bookshops, libraries and many tourist offices. They are very useful, but just bear in mind that the directions are often skimpy and some of the paths may have been re-routed.
