Walk of the Month

NOVEMBER 2007

The Forest of Penhoat-Lancerf
Côtes d’Armor, between Pontrieux and Paimpol, on the eastern side of the Trieux estuary. (From Paimpol, follow the D15 to Plourivo, then the D82 right to Penhoat. Here turn right to Toul Lan, then fork right to Traou Nez)
5 kms, 2 hours
Start from the Maison de l’Estuaire (sometimes called Maison du Littoral) at Traou Nez.
The route is waymarked by the Conservatoire du Littoral.
1. From the Maison de l’Estuaire, go left up the

Trieux estuary.
2. After almost a kilometre go through a tunnel under the railway. On the other side, cross the footbridge and climb to continue in the same direction as before but now with spectacular views across the estuary. The château of La Roche-Jagu now comes into view.
3. Continue down to Coat Ermit (the wood of the hermit).  Here your path doubles back and climbs again to the plateau, following a series of forest tracks and paths, to reach the viewpoint overlooking Trao Nez.
4. From the viewpoint continue to the road above Trao Nez and follow it down to your starting point.

Points of interest:
1. The maison de l’estuaire is the formor manoir de Traou Nez, which had a key role in the Seznec affair, a 20th century miscarriage of justice and cause célèbre, kept alive by the efforts of Denis Le Hir Seznec, grandson of Guillaume Seznec who was falsely accused of murder.
2. The railway that still runs from Paimpol to Guingamp passes through the stunning scenery of this walk. Besides a regular service, some steam trains run in the summer months.
3. Remains of Brittany’s traditional linen industry can be seen at Coat Ermit, in the form of retting tanks, where the flax was soaked and partially rotted to produce the linen fibre.
4. Views of the Trieux estuary, the château at La Roche Jagu, the bridge at Lezardrieux.
